What are the most common types of mites?

Mites are small, often microscopic, arthropods that come in many different shapes and sizes. Invading many different types of environments, these pests often infiltrate silently until they wreak havoc on whatever they are infesting at the moment. These creatures can be extremely difficult to eliminate due to their hard exoskeletons and teeny tiny stature, and often misunderstood biology.

There are hundreds of different species of mites, but some of the most common bothersome mites infest homes, animals, and farmland. Multiplying in droves, mites can infiltrate even the cleanest of environments, leading the way to causing severe discomfort for anyone who may be left defenseless.

Some household mites such as scabies can burrow underneath the skin of humans and cause severe itching and rash. Dust mites, which exist in most furniture and bedding can cause severe allergies and respiratory issues in humans. Other common household mites include spider mites, which can devastate indoor and outdoor plants alike, causing severe damage to gardens and crops.

Other mites prefer animals, such as fur and ear mites. These mites contribute to skin irritation, infections, and severe itching and irritation on cats and dogs alike. Topical fur mites and ear mites crawl around the animal until they eventually lay eggs and multiply, feeding off the skin and blood of the animal like a parasite. Similar to these fur and ear mites, chicken and poultry mites can infest bird coops, leading to discomfort and stress, resulting in decreased productivity in livestock.
